My New Connemara Marble Jewelry
After searching high and low, with the help from one very kind soul here in Ireland I finally found it. The most marvelous Connemara Marble to complete my new handcrafted Irish jewelry collection. The minute I received it, I just knew it would complement my pieces perfectly.
While I had admired this native Irish stone for many years, I could never quite find the right occasion to introduce it into my jewelry designs. The latest addition to my online store is my new Ard Collection. It was inspired by ancient Ogham standing stones. As I worked and reworked sketches for these necklaces, bracelets and pendants, clean elongated forms began to emerge from my drawings. Something was missing.
I began researching how to source a small quantity of natural Connemara Marble from County Galway, located along the west coast of Ireland.
A few short months later, here it was sitting on my silversmith bench in County Cork. With just a small supply of these precious little beads that were kindly shared with me by another Irish maker, I chose the pendants I would use to accent with these marvelous marble beads.
Here is one of the designs from the new collection. You can browse the full Ard Collection which includes these Connemara Marble jewelry pieces on my online shop
As a jewelry designer and silversmith, I love working with a wide range of different gemstones. From one day to the next I may have amazing sparkling diamonds or a vivid green heart shaped emerald on my bench. But there is a unique quality to Connemara Marble that feels just as special as some of the rarest and most expensive gemstones. It is native to Ireland and forms part of the Irish landscape.
All of my contemporary Irish jewelry is inspired by the past. I am proud of my heritage and this is often reflected in my work. I could not have thought of a better material, to compliment my designs, than these gorgeous beads. Connemara Marble is a humble stone and it has such a strong connection to the land.
Check out the video I recorded showing off the beads when they first arrived!
What is Connemara Marble?
The pattern on each beautifully polished bead is totally unique. Sourced directly from the west coast of Ireland, this subtle green colored stone has been forming for millions of years. To be more precise I have been informed it has been forming for somewhere between 650 and 750 million years! It began it's life as lime sediment on the sea bed. Compacted, compressed and subjected to extreme temperatures, it slowly formed into the various minerals in the rock create the distinctive color and layering effect.
If you would like to order any of my pieces and add this gorgeous marble, please feel free to get in touch. I would be happy to customize for you.
